Description
Introduction Over the last 10 years, there has been an increase in discussion and research on spirituality in occupational therapy (Hume 1995, Rose 1999, Udell and Chandler 2000, Belcham 2004, Hoyland and Mayers 2005, Johnston and Mayers 2005). Consideration of client spirituality is an important part of an holistic approach (Christiansen 1997). Holism is a foundational philosophy of occupational therapy (McColl 1994, Hagedorn 2001) and an intrinsic value of occupational therapy practice (Hubbard 1991). Short-DeGraff (1988) stated that what is important to occupational therapists is that the holistic approach recognises the significance of the interaction of the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional components in the whole person. Even so, it is uncertain how holistic occupational therapy is in practice.
